Daniel Winnik will not be in the Maple Leafs line-up Saturday night when they face the New York Rangers. The 29-year-old centre was stretchered off the ice in the first period of the Maple Leafs Thursday night loss to the Colorado Avalanche after falling to the ice head first. Despite passing all concussion protocol, the team decided to keep Winnik out of the line-up. Winnik has appeared in 13 games for the Maple Leafs this season, scoring one goal and six assists. The Maple Leafs recalled left wing Josh Leivo from the American Hockey Leagues Toronto Marlies on Friday. Jonathan Bernier is once again expected to start in net for the Maple Leafs after stopping 31 of 34 shots in the 3-2 shootout loss to the Avs. Phil Kessel was absent from Saturday mornings practice but will dress against the Rangers. Kessel was absent for a stretch of the third period Thursday night but would return to that game. However, Jake Gardiner - who left Thursdays game with a reported bone bruise on his knee - was back on the ice Saturday morning. He will be a game-time decision. Morgan Rielly, who sat Thursday, is expected to return to the line-up as well against New York. MILWAUKEE -- The Miami Marlins lost much more than a game. Theyve likely lost All-Star slugger Giancarlo Stanton for the rest of the season after a frightening scene at Miller Park. Stanton sustained multiple facial fractures, dental damage and cuts that needed stitches after being hit in the face by a fastball from Milwaukees Mike Fiers. The Marlins said Stanton, the major league RBI leader and a top candidate for the NL MVP award, would return to Miami on Friday. "We do not believe he will require surgery," the team said Friday. Asked if Stanton could play again this season, Marlins manager Mike Redmond said, "It does not look good." "Its devastating for us. Devastating. For his season to end like that, I mean, thats not good," Redmond said. Stantons father was at Thursday nights game and came onto the field while his son was treated. It was ruled that Stanton swung trying to get out of the way of the 88 mph pitch from Fiers. Reed Johnson batted for Stanton and was hit in the hand by Fiers next pitch, bringing angry players off the Marlins bench. Miamis Casey McGehee and Redmond were ejected. It was also ruled that Johnson swung at the pitch that hit him, ending the inning with two runners on base. "Ive never seen anything like that and Ive definitely never seen two swings called on those two plays," Redmond said. "Ive never seen a guy get hit in the mouth and called for a swing. Hes out there bleeding at home plate and for the first base ump to say he swung at that pitch, what a joke." Plate umpire Jeff Kellogg said he consulted with first base umpire D.J. Reyburn and determined that both Stanton and Johnson had swung. "Weve both looked at it and, yes, he did swing. They both did, at those pitches," Kellogg said. I just want to send my thoughts and prayers and everything to Stanton. You never think of throwing at somebody like that. Never in my life has that happened. I just feel very, very sad that I hit him. Im sorry to their teammates, their fans, his family. It is just tough."
