I want to be available, obviously stay healthy, and then help the young guys, help my teammates, help everybody be confident and make everybody feel like they’re special.”The Chiefs’ offense was already special, thanks to league MVP Patrick Mahomes and a supporting cast that includes tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.The defense was another story.It ranked near the bottom of the league in every meaningful statistical category last season, and its inability to improve down the stretch doomed the season. The Chiefs were unable to get off the field in overtime of the AFC title game against New England, and that meant Mahomes and the rest of the high-powered offense never got an opportunity with the ball.It wasn’t long until Sutton was fired, Spagnuolo was hired and the overhaul began.The Chiefs released longtime linebacker Justin Houston to free salary cap space last week, and they traded fellow pass rusher Dee Ford to San Francisco for a second-round pick in next year’s draft.Then, after they reached an agreement with Mathieu, they released three-time All-Pro safety Eric Berry in another cap-saving move. Berry had been one of their most popular players throughout his time in Kansas City, but injuries prevented him from playing all but three games the past two seasons.“Certainly, all these guys could help us. It’s the balancing act,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said. “Just being real, the cap is an issue. So, you have to take that into consideration. You look at can they help us at the cost of what it would take to do that?”The Chiefs hope to sign Hill and defensive tackle Chris Jones to extensions this offseason, and they have an opportunity to sign Mahomes to a long-term deal beginning next offseason.“What can we do now to put ourselves in a good position not just for next year, but for the next three, four, five, six years?” Veach said. “So, you go back to where we’ll be both in draft capital and cap space. Miami has been outscored 112-45 while losing its past three games, and has been outscored by 87 points this season, fourth worst in the NFL. The Dolphins haven’t even led at the start of the fourth quarter all season.Now they face a Tampa Bay defense that found its pass rush in a win over the Jets last Sunday with six sacks. But the Bucs also have problems with the ball, scoring a total of 28 points in their past three matches.Cincinnati (3-6) at Denver (3-6)Cincinnati has lost 10 in a row at Denver. It even fell to past and returned QB Brock Osweiler in overtime two years ago during the Broncos’ championship season.Few teams have been more disappointing this season than the Broncos, whose defense has sprung leaks all over the place — in part because of the demands placed on it by an unreliable offense.Yet it’s less anemic than the 31st-ranked Bengals. At least Cincinnati is better in one department: minus-9 in turnovers to Denver’s minus-14.
